Can Anorexia Nervosa Lead to Canadian Disability Benefits?

Warranted or not, the world of fashion and modelling will always be associated with anorexia nervosa.

The eating disorder is defined by a distorted image of one’s appearance, extremely low body weight, low self-esteem to match, and an obsessive paranoia or fear of gaining weight. The condition – both parts mental and physical disability – is attributed to a number of causes, including genetic, neurobiological, nutritional, and psychological factors.

Which Disability Benefits are Anorexia Nervosa Patient’s Eligible for?

A person afflicted with anorexia nervosa will lead a lifestyle much different than others around them – namely they may obsess over maintaining a certain body weight and diet. The challenge is monumental, as anorexia symptoms can crush a person’s ability to live a healthy life, from extreme weight loss and fatigue, to dehydration, osteoporosis, and even depression and thoughts of suicide.

The Canadian government acknowledges that anorexia is a serious affliction. That’s why Canadians suffering with the disease may qualify for disability benefits through the CRA, namely in the form of the Canadian Disability Tax Credit (DTC).

The DTC, and similar disability benefits, were created to assist differently-abled Canadians to maintain their standards of living by alleviating some of the burdens that come with mental and physical disabilities. While Canadian disability benefits vary on a case-to-case basis, they are nevertheless a bonus that you or a loved one should take advantage of if you qualify.

However, many Canadians don’t claim the disability benefits they’re entitled to. They’re either unaware of the benefits they’re eligible for, or – most commonly – they can’t be bothered with the long and complex disability tax credit application.

The National Benefit Authority believes that shouldn’t be the reason you or a loved one is denied the Disabled Tax Credit you’re entitled to.
