How to Setup Direct Deposit with the CRA

Setup Direct Deposit with the Canada Revenue Agency to get your funds sooner.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is switching all its payments to direct deposit. This means any payments issued by the CRA will be conveniently and reliably deposited directly into your account. You can sign up for direct deposit for yourself, or if you are the trustee, custodian, executor, or other type of legal representative for a trust.

How to sign up for direct deposit for an individual

Online

Register for My Account on the Canada Revenue Agency website and sign up for direct deposit.

Online – mobile app

Once you’re registered for My Account, log into MyCRA to start or update your direct deposit information.

By phone

You can set up direct deposit or change your CRA account information by calling the CRA at 1-800-959-8281. You will need the following information:

    • Social insurance number
    • Full name and current address, including postal code
    • Date of birth
    • Most recent income tax and benefit return
    • Information about the most recent payments you received from the Canada Revenue Agency
    • Banking information: financial institution number (three digits), transit number (five digits, and your account number – you’ll find these numbers on the bottom of your personal cheques

How to sign up for direct deposit for a trust

If you are the trustee, custodian, executor, or other type of legal representative for a trust, you can set up or change information for direct deposit with the CRA. For more information about direct deposits for trusts, call the CRA a 1-800-959-8281.

How to sign up for non-resident account holders and NR7-R refund applicants

You can set up direct deposit with the CRA or change your direct deposit information if the following conditions apply:

      • You are a Canadian payer or agent
      • Your non-resident tax account has three alphabet character starting with NR followed by six digits
      • The name on your Canadian bank account matches the name on your non-resident tax account

If you don’t live in Canada, and are filing a Form NR7-R, Application for Refund of Part XIII Tax Withheld, you can set up direct deposits into your bank account at a Canadian financial institution, as long as the name on the bank account matches the name of the applicant or the authorized person on Form NR7-R.
