Sleep Apnea is a Common Disability!

Being able to sleep comfortably allows our body to be well rested so that it can perform to full potential the next day. Hence, when a person’s sleep is interrupted, the hindrances to normal functioning are quite obvious and easy to decipher. The situation gets worse when a person’s sleep is interrupted over an extended period of time as not only does he or she begin to suffer emotionally, but the lack of sleep also results in depletion in the person’s physical health.

Sleep apnea is one such condition which negatively affects our ability to get a good night’s sleep. It involves a breathing disorder which causes a person to miss breaths while he or she is sleeping such that the person has a lower than normal supply of oxygen in his or her body. Sleep apnea could be the cause of an obstruction in the breathing passage, an infection, or may be a result of the sleeping posture. Among the many symptoms a person may exhibit are loud snoring, restlessness while sleeping, and fatigue and drowsiness during the day.

Sleep apnea tends to affect our body in many ways primarily the heart and can also lead to congestive heart failure if it is left unchecked. Furthermore, numerous research studies point out that sleep apnea can also cause an increased risk of other illnesses such as high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes and sleep deprived driving accidents.

Thankfully, a number of treatments are available to combat this distressing condition. These solutions include the use of sleeping aids and breathing aids as well as surgery and alternative therapy. Nonetheless, there is no denying the fact that living with sleep apnea can become very difficult as the sufferer’s ability to work would be negatively affected. Furthermore, his or her personal, family and work relationships would also be adversely impacted.

This is why it is imperative to turn to the disability benefits offered by the Canadian government if one’s doctor pronounces a sleep apnea diagnosis. So how does one claim these benefits? Unfortunately, the process is not as simple as you would like since you must gain a full understanding of not only your condition but also of the specific legalities that apply to claiming disability benefits.
