Disability Benefit Claims For Those Suffering From the Prader Willi Syndrome

A very rare genetic disorder, Prader Willi Syndrome occurs when certain paternal genes are deleted or unexpressed (with the maternal genes also affected). The occurrence of Prader Willi Syndrome is about 1 in 10,000 births and features traits such as hypotonia (which is a condition leading to underdeveloped muscle tone and impaired muscle ability), a short stature, obesity, behavioral issues, limb deformity, mental retardation and developmental disorders. Given the vast damage this condition can do, it is important to identify its features in timely manner and seek appropriate treatment.

Among the signs one should look out for are things like feeding difficulties, excessive sleeping, scoliosis, speech delay, and poor physical coordination. Additionally, one should also be weary of distinctive facial features such as a high and narrow forehead. That said, obesity and an inability to control one’s appetite may also act as warning signals.

Hence, if your child begins to display any of these symptoms it is highly advised that you look towards professional help immediately because the sooner your child gets treatment, the easier things will be for you and your child. Even though there is no permanent cure for Prader Willi Syndrome, please know that there are a variety of therapies that can be used to improve muscles tone and speech. Growth hormone injections may also be used to allow improved growth.

Nonetheless, since Prader Willi Syndrome affects such a broad spectrum of areas, the life of a patient is likely to be quite hard. It is for this reason that the Canadian government offers various disability benefits which are aimed at helping the patient and his or her family better cope with the condition. These benefits come in various forms such as Disability Tax Benefits, Child Disability Benefits, and Disability Tax Credits.
