Obsessive Compulsive Disorder makes you Eligible for a Disability Benefit Claim

The technical definition of an obsession is as follows; an obsession is an unwanted thought that tends to repeat itself and compels the victim to perpetually act upon it.

By its nature, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can be a very uncomfortable condition. A person with OCD is constantly plagued with the idea of performing an obsessive or compulsive act even though the person may derive no comfort or pleasure from the execution of the obsessive or compulsive activity.  Instead, the person remains steadfast to his or her obsessive/compulsive behavior as he or she fears something bad may happen if the obsessive/compulsive act is not performed; for instance a person may have be very fearful of catching a disease and hence to avoid this from happening he or she may wash his or her hands excessively.

Given that the obsessive/compulsive behavior may become very overwhelming, the hindrances to normal functioning presented by OCD are quite obvious. After all, a person may go well out of his/her way to incorporate the obsessive/compulsive behavior into his/her routine.

Hence, while some people may have a mild tendency towards a certain obsessive/compulsive act, others may see their entire life dominated by an obsessive/compulsive activity. People with OCD generally have a set thought process which begins with the obsession, leads to anxiety and then compulsion and then the temporary relief from performing that act. Of course the types of thoughts will vary on a case to case basis, however at times these thoughts when linked with people close to us, can be very detrimental to our social relationships. That said, note that the causes of OCD are not entirely psychological and include imbalanced serotonin levels in the brain, abnormalities in the brain and/or even genetic factors.

Hence there is no denying that OCD is a very harmful disability. Fortunately though is the fact that OCD can be tamed over time through extra effort, medication and psychotherapy. All it takes on the patient’s part is his/her courage to accept his/her condition and take the first step towards treatment.

Treatment though may take quite a lot of time as results don’t surface overnight. Hence, it is quite normal for a patient suffering from OCD to face considerable financial and emotional burdens during the treatment phase. As a result, it is highly advised that if you are diagnosed with OCD you immediately turn to the various disability benefits offered by the Canadian government. These benefits come in many forms and thus they can greatly simplify your life for you.

That said, it is important to note that availing benefits may initially be a cumbersome task since you will need to carry out considerable research in the hopes of finding benefits pertinent to your case. Alternatively, you could make things easy and simple for yourself by coming to us at the National Benefit Authority (NBA). We at the NBA have seen far too many people go through all of the disability benefit formalities alone and suffer as a result. Thus we have made it our mission to offer help to people in your situation so that you are easily able to make an effective claim.
