Making a Disability Benefit Claim for Huntington’s Disease

Diseases of the brain are more common than most people think such that they affect a large number of people in Canada. This is why the Canadian government has recognized the difficulties associated with brain conditions and has thus earmarked numerous disability benefits for those affected by such a problem. Huntington’s Disease is one of these brain problems which is also classified as a disability by the Canadian Revenue Agency, thus allowing its sufferers to avail many disability benefits.

Huntington’s Disease is caused by a faulty gene that leads to nerve cell damage and a deterioration and gradual loss of function of various areas of the brain. This disease affects adult men and women as well as a small proportion of children. The diagnosis of the disease is seen through behavioral as well as psychiatric symptoms including a lack of emotion, and alternating periods of aggression or antisocial behavior. Other serious symptoms include movement problems, feeding problems, communication issues, and problems in maintaining a healthy sex life.

Sadly there is no cure for the spread or containment of Huntington’s Disease although medication and therapy can still be used to combat some of the symptoms. Note that the medicines prescribed vary from one case to the next such that you may be asked to take anti-depressants, sleeping tablets or nerve relaxants to help control involuntary movements.

That said, there is no denying that Huntington’s Disease is a very serious condition. After all, it has the ability to take one’s independence away such that the victim becomes wholly dependant on outside help in performing various physical tasks. Thus it is safe to say that Huntington’s Disease is taxing both emotionally and financially on the victim as well as his or her family (as loved ones would need to devote a lot of time in caring for the patient). However it is important to always remember that even though one is diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease, all is certainly not lost! The disability benefits offered by the Canadian government can go a very long way to making the life of a patient easier and more comfortable.
