what are the possible complications of rheumatoid arthritis? I just want to know how seriously damaging it could get.

one complication i know is pericarditis. that is the inflammation of the membrane enclosing the heart. Pericarditis sure is a serious condition.

stacey is right, rheumatoid arthritis can really result to serious damage. Aside form pericarditis, another complication I'd like to add up is
pleural effusion
. It is when fluid accumulates the layers of the membrane lining the lungs and the chest cavity.

just to add up... scarring and thickening of lung tissue may occur. RA is a progressive disease. but there are also some who suffer only one attack of this disease in their lives.

Very frighten complication that you can get is the deformities. For 2 years consistent without medication the chance of disabilities very big.

Since this disease is chronic there are lots of possible complication that you might get. Eye complication, effect on the skin called rheumatic nodules, depression as well as heart and blood vessel diseases complication.

Agree with santy joint deformity is a very frighten complication among them. Anemia, blood vessel inflammation and serious debility are also common.

Hypersplenism, monocytosis, lung cavity and aseptic necrosis of bones are one of the complication that can be consider.
