Ataxia and Its Implications for You

Ataxia is a neurological condition which leads to the loss of coordination in muscle movement. While early issues of this medical problem include things such as unsteadiness and clumsiness, problems with vision, hearing and speech also tend to arise as the condition worsens.

Ataxia usually has numerous causes and is considered to be both an inherited as well as a non-inherited condition. Worse still, diagnosing Ataxia can become a tricky affair as the symptoms of Ataxia are similar to the symptoms of many other medical problems. However, when Ataxia is suspected, doctors will usually prescribe the patient to undergo rigorous testing such as blood tests, MRI scans, and genetic tests.

Alas, if Ataxia is diagnosed, one should know that this medical problem has no specific cure or treatment. Generally speaking, physical therapy is seen as the only thing which can help counter some of the problems associated with Ataxia. That said, medications may also be prescribed on a case to case basis to help nullify specific symptoms such as muscle spasms.

In retrospect, you can see that having Ataxia can make life very arduous for the victim. Therefore it is no surprise that having Ataxia would allow you to avail various disability benefits. These benefits are provided by the Canadian government and come in numerous forms such as Disability Tax Credit and grants.

Educating yourself about these benefits is essential as these benefits have been created to ensure that people like you who suffer from disabilities are able to live life as normally as possible. Now you might wonder how you are to go about things if you were to secure these benefits for yourself or a loved one who is suffering from a disability.

Well, know that while information about these benefits is readily available, research shows that disabled persons still find it hard to find relevant data that allows ease in meeting all the stipulated formalities. Hence, if you are seriously interested in availing disability benefits, it would be only common sense to turn to an organization such as the National Benefit Authority (NBA).
