Is Alzheimer's Disease Considered a Disability?

Alzheimer's disease, commonly referred to as just AD, is among the most common forms of dementia. First described in 1906 by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer, AD is an incurable, degenerative and terminal illness. Usually found in people over the age of 65 years, AD affects about 27 million people worldwide. Given the severe nature of this mental illness, AD is definitely considered a disability and it is for this reason that special care needs to be given to people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

As a reader of this article, it is imperative that you first familiarize yourself with the symptoms of AD so that you are able to spot the signs from the onset. While the symptoms may vary from person to person, certain signs such as confusion, aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, and eventual long-term memory loss remain common to all sufferers.

Hence, it is pretty obvious that AD is no laughing matter and that this condition needs to be taken seriously. Thankfully, governments around the world have noted the gravity of the situation such that AD patients, particularly in Canada, have the opportunity to avail numerous disability benefits.

These benefits come in many forms and are tailored to ensure that people suffering from AD - as well as other mental or physical disabilities – are able to maintain a normal standard of living. If you have a loved one suffering from AD or any other disability, you should try and read up as much as you can about the benefits the government provides. You would be happy to know that the Canadian government not only provides grants, but it has also incorporated Disability Tax Credit and saving plans into the benefits it offers.

While there is a lot of information available on these benefits and the procedures pertaining to attaining these benefits, the mammoth amounts of data that needs to be read can be overbearing for some. Meanwhile, others may find that meeting all the required formalities requires extremely mundane and cumbersome work. Hence for such reasons, people who can avail disability benefits may decide to shy away from their deserved benefits.

This though does not have to be the case for you. We at the National Benefit Authority (NBA) have made it our mission to ensure that you get all the guidance and help you need in attaining your due benefits.
